"Lorrie Clearly explained and led yoga exercises. Everyone appeared to be comfortable. There was no pressure." Britt I. Frequently Asked Questions about Yoga "What would your life be like if you embraced yourself fully ... and celebrated all that is you?.” ~Lorrie Jones
Q: What should I expect to experience as I step onto my yoga mat?
A: When we come to our mats, we bring our true selves, including our thoughts, emotions and sensations. Each time we begin our yoga practice, we experience this moment – not one previously experienced or one imagined in the future. At the very least, plan to experience your life deepening and becoming healthier. What we do on our mats cultivates an awakened outlook and a mindful awareness.
Q: What does Hatha Yoga mean?
A: "Hatha Yoga" refers to a set of physical exercises (known as asanas) and sequences of asanas, designed to align your skin, muscles and bones. Hatha yoga is a path toward creating balance and uniting opposites. In our physical bodies we develop a balance of strength and flexibility. We also learn to balance our effort and surrender in each pose.
Q: Do I have to be a vegetarian to practice yoga?
A: All eating habits are welcome in a yoga practice. Traditions may vary a bit but overall, there is no need to be a vegetarian. The most important aspect of nutrition is choosing healthy and wholesome foods and beverages.
Q: How many times a week should I practice?
A: Even if you practice for one hour a week, you will experience the benefits of the practice. Do what you can and don’t worry about it. Ideally, beginning with two to three times a week, for an hour or an hour and a half each time is ideal.
Q: Is yoga a religion?
A: Yoga is not a religion. It is a philosophy that began in India an estimated 5,000 yeas ago. It is not necessary to surrender your own religious beliefs to practice yoga!
Q: What do I need to begin?
A: All you really need is curiosity and a sense of openness. It is helpful to have sweat pants or stretch leggings and a t-shirt that is not too baggy. Most studios have mats yet some people prefer to bring their own. In addition to a water bottle, an open mind and spirit are most helpful.
